Making The Girl Who Wore Freedom: The Podcast Diary
Documentary First started in March 2019 as a diary. I was a first-time director trying to finish The Girl Who Wore Freedom, my D-Day story told through the French civilians who lived it, and the show followed what I was learning while I was still learning it.
For the first few years the show followed the film week by week: running out of money, focus group screenings, picture lock, the festival run, the release, a distribution deal that fell apart and a new one that worked, and finally a theatrical release for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. My co-hosts Josh Lindsay and Jason Rugg were there for much of it. These are the episodes I’d start with.
2019: Finishing the film
Where it all started: how I got my start in filmmaking, why a good team matters, and how being a mom helped me as a producer.
At my lowest point, I ran out of money while finishing the edit in Tennessee. Donors came through on the day we were going to end the project.

What it takes to run focus group screenings: eleven of them in Normandy, and feedback from the 500 people who had seen the film.

All those focus groups left a long list of fixes. The goal: picture lock by February 6 so we could submit to film festivals.
